Women's volleyball upended by Chestnut Hill 3-1

PHILADELPHIA – Middle hitters Terra Ecker (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) and Corrine Justus (Allentown, Pa./Emmaus) led the Philadelphia University women's volleyball team with 12 kills each in a 3-1 loss to Chestnut Hill in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference match in the Gallagher Center Friday night.

Philadelphia (11-12, 8-5 CACC) opened the match with a 25-23 set one victory. Chestnut Hill (12-12, 7-6 CACC) came back to take the next three sets 25-18, 25-17, and 25-17.

Outside hitter Chelsea Hughes (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) contributed 11 kills for the Rams. Setters Nina Morvin (Willow Grove, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) and Claudia Papola (Temple, Pa./Muhlenburg) contributed 28 and 15 assists, respectively. Libero Michele Chai (Sinking Spring, Pa./Berks Catholic) added 27 digs, while outside hitter Erin Lyman (Algonquin, Ill./Huntley) had 25 digs.

Led by three Chai service aces and two Justus kills, Philadelphia scored six consecutive points to open up an 11-3 first set advantage. Chestnut Hill got back into the set with a 9-2 run, which included six Philadelphia errors, to take an 18-17 lead. After a Courtney Williams kills tied the set at 23, Philadelphia would get assisted by consecutive Chestnut Hill errors to win the set.

The Rams controlled the early part of set two, getting out to an 8-4 lead. The Griffins scored four straight points to tie the set at eight on a Madison McBride kill. With the set tied at 11, Chestnut Hill grabbed its first lead of the set on another McBride kill. Alyssa Tamsing recorded a kill to extend the Griffins' lead to 22-16. After back-to-back Manley kills brought Philadelphia within four (22-18), Chestnut Hill earned the final three points of the set to tie the match.

Chestnut Hill never trailed during the third set. The Griffins owned a set-high 11-point lead (18-7) on a Ram attack error.  A Justus kill brought Philadelphia within six at 20-14. Kaitlyn Schock ended the set with a kill.

In the final set, the Griffins got off to a 7-1 start and never looked back. McBride had two service aces during the charge. Philadelphia got as close 16-13 after consecutive Justus kills. Chestnut Hill ended the match with a 9-2 run, which included three more service aces by McBride.

McBride led the Griffins with 21 kills, 15 digs, and seven service aces. Rachel Biro added 12 kills. Tamsing contributed 37 assists and 14 digs.

Philadelphia ends to Felician for a CACC match on Saturday, Oct. 25 at 1 p.m.
