Women's volleyball falls in four to Georgian Court

PHILADELPHIA – Outside hitter Erin Lyman (Algonquin, Ill./Huntley) and setter Nina Morvin (Willow Grove, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) each recorded a double-double in the Philadelphia University women's volleyball team's 3-1 loss to Georgian Court in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) match Friday night in the Gallagher Center.

The Lions (7-9, 3-2 CACC) opened the match with a 25-20 set-one win and the Rams (5-9, 3-2 CACC) fought back to tie the match with a 28-26 victory in the second set. Georgian Court won the last two sets 25-22 and 25-20.

Lyman recorded 10 kills and a team-high 17 digs for her fourth double-double of the year. Morvin's fourth double-double consisted of a team-best 24 assists and 12 digs.

Middle hitter Chelsea Hughes (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) paced the offense with 14 kills and a hitting percentage of .355. Libero Michele Chai (Sinking Spring, Pa./Berks Catholic) tallied 16 digs, while outside hitter Allison Manley (Saint Charles, Ill./Saint Charles East) had 12 digs.

After Philadelphia got out to a 10-5 set-one lead on a block from middle hitters Lauren Laucella (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) and Corinne Justus (Allentown, Pa./Emmaus), Georgian Court scored seven straight points to move ahead 12-10. The Rams were able to tie the score at 12 with another Laucella and Justus block and a Lyman kill. With the set tied at 15, Georgian Court rattled off three straight points to take control of the set.

Philadelphia got off to a strong start in set two, scoring six of the first seven points. After the Lions tied the set at 10, Justus recorded a service ace to start a 5-1 run that gave the Rams a 15-11 lead. A late 4-1 Georgian Court run gave the Lions set point at 26-25. Philadelphia responded with kills from Laucella and Lyman to move ahead 27-26. The Rams tied the match on a Lion attack error.

Georgian Court overcame an early 6-4 deficit with six straight points, which included three service aces from Tatiana Rodriguez. Trailing 14-9, Philadelphia went on a 5-1 surge, including two kills from Hughes, to get as close as 15-14. Leading 23-22, a Philadelphia attack error and a Rodrigues kill put Georgian Court in front two sets to one.

A 6-0 run by the Lions put the visitors ahead 9-7 in the fourth set. The Lions lead grew to 17-13 on Rodriguez's 12th and final kill of the match. Philadelphia answered back with five of the next six points to tie the set at 18 on a Georgian Court attack error. After the error, the Lions went on a 6-1 surge to move ahead 24-19. Kelsie Blue ended the match with a solo block.

Annabelle Barinas paced the Georgian Court offense with 17 kills, while Kelsey Oliver tallied 51 assists.

Philadelphia heads to Concordia (N.Y.) for a CACC match on Saturday, Oct. 4 at 3 p.m.
