Box Score WILMINGTON, Del. – Middle hitter Chelsea Hughes (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) led the Philadelphia University women's volleyball team with 14 kills as the Rams defeated Goldey-Beacom 3-1 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) match Wednesday night in the Jones Center.
The teams were tied after two sets as Philadelphia (7-9, 5-2 CACC) won set one 25-18 and Goldey-Beacom (8-10, 3-6 CACC) took the second set 25-14. Philadelphia put the match away by taking the next two sets 25-22 and 29-27.
Outside hitter Erin Lyman (Algonquin, Ill./Huntley) recorded her fifth double-double of the year with 12 kills and 16 digs. Middle hitter Lauren Laucella (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) contributed 10 kills and four block assists.
Setters Nina Morvin (Willow Grove, Pa./St. Basil Academy) and Claudia Papola (Temple, Pa./Muhlenburg) had 26 and 20 assists, respectively. Libero Michele Chai (Sinking Spring, Pa./Berks Catholic) led the defensive effort with a match-high 25 digs.
Philadelphia used an 8-2 run, capped off by three straight Goldey-Beacom errors, to turn an early 6-2 deficit into a 10-8 lead. After the Lightning tied the set at 12, the Rams took control with a 7-1 run to take a 19-13 advantage on a kill by middle hitter Corinne Justus (Allentown, Pa./Emmaus). Hughes ended the set with a kill.
The Rams established a 10-6 lead at the start of set two. Then, Philadelphia lost its offensive rhythm and committed 10 errors that allowed Goldey-Beacom to score 19 of the set's final 23 points. Kadi McCoy had four kills during the charge for Goldey-Beacom.
Philadelphia broke open a tight third set with seven straight points to grab an 18-12 cushion on a Laucella kill. Papola had two service aces in the run. The gap grew to 21-14 on a kill from outside hitter Allison Manley (Saint Charles, Ill./Saint Charles East). The Rams had a .303 hitting percentage during the third set.
In the fourth, Hughes recorded a kill that allowed Philadelphia take a set-high four-point lead at 22-18. A 5-1 Goldey-Beacom run, that included four straight kills, gave the Lightning a set point at 25-24. After a Philadelphia timeout, the Rams scored three of the next four points to go ahead 27-26. A bad set tied the set at 27. A Manley kill and a Goldey-Beacom attack error closed out the match for Philadelphia.
McCoy had a match-high 18 points and 13 digs to lead Goldey-Beacom.
Philadelphia heads to Georgian Court for a CACC match on Friday, Oct. 10 at 6 p.m.
