Women's volleyball suffers 3-2 loss to Caldwell

CALDWELL, N.J. –Terra Ecker (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) tallied a career-high 21 kills and eight total blocks in a 3-2 loss to Caldwell in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) match Saturday afternoon in the Newman Center.

The host Cougars (19-9, 13-4 CACC) jumped out to a 2-0 lead with 25-15 and 25-23 victories in the first two sets. Philadelphia (13-14, 10-7 CACC) fought back to win the next two sets 28-26 and 25-20 to tie the match. Caldwell won the match with a 17-15 set five victory.

Erin Lyman (Algonquin, Ill./Huntley) racked up a career-high 17 kills and 11 digs for her eighth double-double of the season. Corrine Justus (Allentown, Pa./Emmaus) had 13 kills and Chelsea Hughes (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) added 10 kills.

Nina Morvin (Willow Grove, Pa./St. Basil's Academy) contributed a match-high 32 assists, while Claudia Papola (Temple, Pa./Muhlenburg) had 26 assists. Michele Chai led the defensive effort with a match-best 29 digs.

Caldwell's Athena Nestoras recorded a triple-double with 18 kills, 21 assists, and 12 digs. Taryn Auyong added 11 kills and 11 digs, while Gabrielle Burnett rattled off 27 assists and 11 digs.

The Cougars scored the first six points of the match, four on Ram errors, to easily take the opening set. Caldwell hit .276 in the set (12-4-29) and Philadelphia hit .031 (10-9-32).

Philadelphia broke a 14-all tie in set two with four straight points to jump ahead 18-14. A Caldwell error extended the Philadelphia lead to 20-15. After a Lyman kill made the score 21-16, the Cougars rattled off nine of the final 11 points to take a 2-0 lead. Narae Wadsworth led the charge with four kills.

Hughes and Ecker combined to score five straight points to give the Rams a 13-9 set-three advantage. Caldwell answered back with a 13-4 surge to jump ahead 22-17. Facing four set points (24-20), the Rams got kills from Ecker, Lyman and Hughes, and a block from Hughes and Justus to tie the set. Philadelphia overcame a 26-25 deficit with two Lyman kills and a Justus block to win the set.

A 12-4 run, led by three Justus kills, in set four gave Philadelphia a 12-5 lead. With Caldwell back within three (16-13), the Rams scored four straight points to regain a seven-point lead (20-13) on a Lyman service ace.

Philadelphia erased an 11-6 deficit in the final set with three Ecker kills and three Caldwell errors to move ahead 12-11. After swapping the next five points, Jessica Mitchell recorded a service ace to give Caldwell a 15-14 lead. The Cougars snapped a 15-all deadlock with Nestoras and Rachael DiLeonardo kills to win the match.
