Box Score PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia University women's volleyball team put together its best performance of the season on Saturday en route to a 3-0 Senior Day victory over Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) opponent Bloomfield in the regular season finale in the Gallagher Center.
After taking the match with scores of 25-10, 25-19, and 25-13, Philadelphia ended the regular season with a 15-14 overall record and a 12-7 conference mark. The Rams earned the southern division's third seed and will face Post—the runner-up in the north—in a CACC Tournament quarterfinal on Tuesday, Nov. 11 at 7 p.m.
The volleyball team honored seniors Terra Ecker (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) and Lauren Elliott (Austin, Texas/Middlesex) before the start of the match. During the match, Ecker led the team with nine kills and five total blocks (one solo, four assists), and Elliott had two kills and three digs.
Erin Lyman (Algonquin, Ill./Huntley) recorded eight kills, six digs, and four service aces. Allison Manley (Saint Charles, Ill./Saint Charles East) contributed seven kills and nine digs, while Chelsea Hughes (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) had seven kills.
Nina Morvin (Willow Grove, Pa./Saint Basil's Academy) and Claudia Papola (Temple, Pa./Muhlenburg) tallied 19 and12 assists, respectively.
The Rams recorded a season-best .480 hitting percentage (40-4-75).
Philadelphia had 13 kills without an error and hit .619 in the opening set win. The Rams took control with eight straight points to take an 11-3 lead on a Michele Chai (Sinking Spring, Pa./Berks Catholic) service ace. Philadelphia's advantage grew to 16-6 on a Bloomfield attack error. The set ended with five straight Philadelphia points.
A Hughes kill broke a 5-all set two tie and started a 3-0 mini run to give the Rams an 8-5 lead. The gap grew to 16-10 on Lyman's third kill of the set. After Bloomfield closed within 18-14, Philadelphia scored three straight points to take a set-high 21-14 lead on a Corinne Justus (Allentown, Pa./Emmaus) kill. Ecker's fourth kill of the set gave the Rams a 2-0 match lead.
Like the first set, Philadelphia did not make an attacking error. The Rams had 11 kills on 19 attacks for a .579 hitting percentage. With Philadelphia holding a 7-6 lead, a Justus kill sparked a 7-1 run to give the Rams a 14-7 advantage. The lead grew to 23-12 on a Bear attack error. Ecker led the offense with three kills, while Chai had two service aces.
Diannmarie Rivera led the Bears (15-14, 11-8 CACC) with seven kills and nine digs.
