Box Score LANGHORNE, Pa. – Middle hitter Chelsea Hughes (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) recorded 16 kills, while middle hitter Lauren Laucella (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) added 11 kills in the Philadelphia University women's volleyball team's 3-1 non-conference win at Cairn Wednesday night.
Philadelphia is now 3-4 overall after winning the match 25-8, 19-25, 25-11, 25-20. Cairn falls to 4-8 overall.
Setter Claudia Papola (Temple, Pa./Muhlenburg) recorded a career-high eight service aces—tied for the most in a Division II four-set match this season. Middle hitter Terra Ecker (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) contributed eight kills. Papola and Ecker led the team with 13 digs each.
Fellow setters Nina Morvin (Willow Grove, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) and Alexandra Noll (Brockport, N.Y./Notre-Dame Batavia) added 24 and 14 assists, respectively.
The Highlanders received a match-best 17 kills and a team-high 11 digs from Kate Steger. Sam Delfino added 29 assists, while Bridgid Shehan had eight kills and 12 digs.
Philadelphia posted a .478 hitting percentage (13-2-23) in a dominating set one win. The Rams scored seven straight points to take an 8-1 lead on a Laucella kill. A Cairn attack error gave Philadelphia a set-high 14-point advantage (20-6). Hughes had four kills, while Laucella posted three kills.
Cairn never trailed in the second set to tie the match at one. The Highlanders owned three eight-point leads toward the end of the set. Steger had six kills and two service aces for the home team.
A fast 5-1 start by Philadelphia allowed the Rams to control set three. The Rams led by as many as seven points during the set. Papola recorded the final three Philadelphia points with three service aces. The Rams had a .333 hitting percentage (12-4-24) in the set.
With the help of three Cairn errors, Philadelphia rattled off six straight points to tie the final set at 11. Two more Highlander miscues and an Ecker kills put the Rams in ahead 15-12. The cushion grew to seven (24-17) on Papola's final service ace of the match.
Philadelphia heads to Rockville Centre, N.Y. for a non-conference tri-match on Saturday, Sept. 20 against Assumption and host Molloy starting at 1 p.m.
