Box Score PHILADELPHIA – Outside hitters Allison Manley (Saint Charles, Ill./Saint Charles East) and Erin Lyman (Algonquin, Ill./Huntley) each recorded a double-double in Philadelphia University women's volleyball's 3-1 (13-25, 25-21, 25-20, 25-16) Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) victory over visiting Wilmington (Del.) Tuesday night in the Gallagher Center.
Philadelphia improves to 5-8 overall and 3-1 in the CACC, while Wilmington is now 6-11 overall and 3-2 in conference play.
Manley had 11 kills and 15 digs for her fourth double-double of the year, while Lyman tallied 10 kills and a career-high 20 digs to complete her third double-double of 2014.
Middle hitter Chelsea Hughes (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) led the Rams with 14 kills and a .393 hitting percentage. Setter Nina Morvin (Willow Grove, Pa./St. Basil Academy) had 27 assists, and libero Michele Chai (Sinking Spring, Pa./Berks Catholic) added 24 digs.
Philadelphia struggled offensive in the opening set loss, recorded 10 errors and a hitting percentage of -.061. On the other side, Wilmington posted a hitting percentage of .267 (11-3-30). The Wildcats took control of the set early on with a 5-0 run to take an 8-3 lead on a Kaitlin DiGiacinto kill. Later in the set, Wilmington went on a 6-0 surge with the help of four Philadelphia miscues to move ahead 22-11.
The Rams came out strong in the second set, jumping out to a 9-3 lead. Wilmington made four errors during the Philadelphia charge. After Wilmington closed the gap to 23-20 and forced a Philadelphia timeout, middle hitter Corrine Justus (Allentown, Pa./Emmaus) recorded a kill to put the Rams at set point. Lauren Laucella (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) closed out the set with a kill.
Set three was a back-and-forth affair, featuring 11 ties and four lead changes. The Rams took control of the set with four straight points, capped by a block from Laucella and middle hitter Terra Ecker (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill), to grab a 21-17 lead. Hughes pushed the lead to 24-19 with her third kill of the set. A Wilmington attack error ended the set and gave Philadelphia a 2-1 lead.
With the fourth set tied at 10, Philadelphia put a stranglehold on the match by going on a 12-2 run to take a 22-12 lead. Manley led the charge with three kills, while Hughes and Justus added two each. Justus ended the match with a service ace. The Rams had 16 kills in the final set and hit .378.
Alex Siolos had a triple-double for Wilmington consisting of 23 assists, 14 digs, and 10 kills.
Philadelphia returns to the court on Friday, Oct. 3 to face Georgian Court in the Gallagher Center at 6 p.m.
