Volleyball pushes streak to six with 3-0 win over Holy Family

PHILADELPHIA – Courtney Wensel (Bechtelsville, Pa./Berks Catholic) posted 12 kills and 11 digs as the Philadelphia University women's volleyball team won its sixth straight match, 3-0 (25-20, 25-18, 25-15) over Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) opponent Holy Family Thursday night in the Gallagher Center.

Chelsea Hughes (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) recorded nine kills on 18 attempts, while Michele Chai (Sinking Spring, Pa./Berks Catholic) added 11 digs. Nina Morvin (Willow Grove, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) had a match-high 14 assists and Alexandra Harrington (St. Leonard, Md./Huntingtown) contributed 12 assists.

After giving up the first point of the match, Philadelphia (8-4, 4-1 CACC) rattled off five straight points, three on kills from Hughes, to take a 5-1 lead. The Rams held the lead until the Tigers (2-14, 1-5 CACC) tied the score at nine on a Rachel Johnson service ace. Johnson added a kill later in the set to give Holy Family a 13-11 lead. Trailing 15-13, Philadelphia scored seven straight points, two thanks a pair of Allison Manley (Saint Charles, Ill./Saint Charles East) service aces, to take a 20-15 lead and control of the set.

The Rams took advantage of three Tiger attack errors and two Hughes' kills to jump out to an 8-2 second set lead. Holy Family closed the gap to 9-6 on a Johnson kill—one of her team-leading eight. Philadelphia recovered to rattle off four points in a row to move head by seven (13-6) on a Corinne Justus (Allentown, Pa./Emmaus) kills. The Rams didn't allow the Tigers to get any closer than five points (20-15) during the rest of the set.

Like the first set, Philadelphia established an early 5-1 lead in the third. The Rams maintained a tight lead, ranging from three to five points, until a Wensel kill and two Wensel service aces ballooned the cushion to 16-8. The lead grew to a match-high 10 (21-11) on Manley's third and final service ace of the match.

Philadelphia finishing the match hitting .272, while keeping Holy Family to .101.

Natalie Stewart added 13 assists and Candyce Riley posted 10 digs for the Tigers.
