Volleyball sweeps Chestnut Hill for 10th consecutive victory

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia University women's volleyball team has its first 10-match winning streak since the 2013 season after sweeping host Chestnut Hill 25-15, 25-20, 25-20 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) match Tuesday night in Sorgenti Arena.

Philadelphia is now 12-4 overall and 8-1 against the CACC. Chestnut Hill goes to 6-15 overall, 5-3 in conference play.

Philadelphia's current 10-match winning streak, the fifth such streak in program history, is the first since the team posted 10 straight wins from Oct. 23, 2013 through Nov. 13, 2013. That season, the Rams went to the CACC Tournament championship match.

Courtney Wensel (Bechtelsville, Pa./Berks Catholic), the most recent CACC rookie of the week, had another solid performance as she turned in 11 kills, 16 digs, and two service aces, all match highs.

Chelsea Hughes (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) added nine kills, while Daniela Cintron (Guaynabo, Puerto Ricoo/Academia Maria Reina), back in the lineup after missing the last 10 matches due to injury, had a career-high seven kills. Alexandra Harrington (St. Leonard, Md./Huntingtown) contributed a match-best 21 assists.

The Rams, who hit .378 in the opening set, used an 11-1 run—which included three Wensel kills and two Cintron kills—to open up a 15-5 cushion. Chestnut Hill was able to trim the gap to 15-8, but Philadelphia ended the rally with an 8-4 surge to take a set-high 23-12 lead on a Wensel kill. Wensel had six kills in the opening set.

Philadelphia faced an early 3-2 set-two deficit until Corinne Justus (Allentown, Pa./Emmaus) sparked a 9-3 run with one of her six kills to put the Rams in front 11-6. After the Griffins closed within 13-10 on an Emily Koehler kill, the Rams opened up a set high seven-point lead with four straight points, capped off by one of Allison Manley's (Saint Charles, Ill./Saint Charles East) six kills. Seven different Rams had a kill in the set, four each from Lauren Laucella (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) and Manley.

In the final set, Philadelphia never trailed as it scored the first four points—two on Hughes kills and two on Chestnut Hill errors. The advantage reached five (12-7) on a Chestnut Hill attack error. With the Rams in front 13-8, the Griffins scored four straight points to close the gap to 13-12 on a Philadelphia miscue. A Justus kill started a string of three straight points to help the Rams reestablish a four-point lead, 18-14. After a timeout with the Rams in front 22-20, Philadelphia closed out the match with a Hughes kill and back-to-back Wensel service aces.

Rachel Biro led the Griffins with eight kills, while Madison McBride added five kills and nine digs.

Philadelphia returns to the Gallagher Center to face Georgian Court in a CACC match on Thursday, Oct. 15 at 7 p.m.
