Balanced attack pushes women's volleyball by Goldey-Beacom 3-0

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA – Four players recorded at least eight kills for the Philadelphia University women's volleyball team in a 25-13, 25-12, 25-21 victory over Goldey-Beacom in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) match Thursday night in the Gallagher Center.

Philadelphia, a winner in 14 of its last 15 matches, improves to 16-5 overall and 12-2 in CACC play. Thanks to Wilmington's 3-1 loss to Holy Family, Philadelphia reclaims the top spot in the southern division, one-half game ahead of the Wildcats.

The Lightning fall to 6-17, 2-13 against the conference.

Chelsea Hughes (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) led the Rams' offense with 10 kills and a .476 hitting percentage. Corinne Justus (Allentown, Pa./Emmaus) contributed nine kills, three block assists, and one service ace. Lauren Laucella (Hatboro, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) and Courtney Wensel (Bechtelsville, Pa./Berks Catholic) chipped in with eight kills each. Wensel also had a team-best 10 digs and four service aces.

Nina Morvin (Willow Grove, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) posted 20 assists and five service aces, both match highs.

With Philadelphia leading 7-5, Justus sparked a 10-2 surge with the first of her two set one kills to give the Rams a 17-7 cushion. Morvin completed the run with three consecutive service aces. Olivia Manning's (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) only kill of the match not only gave the Rams a set-high 12-point lead (25-13), but also ended the set to put the team up 1-0. Laucella led the Rams with four kills, while Hughes had three.

Set two was all Rams as they hit .296 and kept the Lightning to -0.034. Behind a pair of service aces from Wensel—who led the Rams with five set two kills—and two Hughes kills, Philadelphia sprinted out to a 6-1 advantage. Goldey-Beacom managed to cut the margin to 11-7, but Philadelphia ended the threat by winning 14 of the last 19 points to cruise to a 2-0 lead.

A string for three consecutive Goldey-Beacom points put the Lightning ahead in the third set 14-13, the Rams' first deficit of the match. Laucella started a brief 3-0 spurt with one of her four kills during the set to put Philadelphia ahead 16-14. The Lightning came back to tie the score at 19 on an attack error. Philadelphia recovered and closed out the match with a 6-2 surge. Morvin served out the match with back-to-back service aces.

Emily Fleegle led the Lightning with six kills and a .353 hitting percentage. Grace McCarthy added four kills and six digs.

Philadelphia heads to Dominican (N.Y.) for a CACC match on Saturday, Oct. 31 at noon.
