Box Score ORANGEBURG, N.Y. – Chelsea Hughes (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) recorded a match-high 14 kills and hit a season-best .583 as the Philadelphia University women's volleyball team swept Dominican (N.Y.) 25-7, 25-15, 25-15 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) match Saturday afternoon in the Hennessy Center.
Philadelphia improves to 13-2 overall and a southern division leading 13-2 against the CACC. The Rams can lock up a playoff berth with a victory in their next match, which comes on Wednesday, Nov. 4 at Holy Family at 7 p.m.
Corinne Justus (Allentown, Pa./Emmaus) racked up seven kills and four blocks assists, while Courtney Wensel (Bechtelsville, Pa./Berks Catholic) had seven kill and eight digs.
Nina Morvin (Willow Grove, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) contributed 22 assists, a match-high. Allison Manley (Saint Charles, Ill./Saint Charles East) was the defensive leader with 15 digs to go with four kills.
The Rams posted 40 kills and hit .295 as a team and held the Chargers (4-23, 4-11 CACC) to 14 kills and a -0.081 hitting percentage.
In the opening set, the Rams had 13 kills and hit a match-high .407, while the Chargers hit -0.154. The first of three Hughes' set-one kills tied the set at two and sparked a 13-1 run that put Philadelphia ahead 14-3. Philadelphia finished off the set with the eight of the last nine points.
The Rams scored three straight points, capped by a Hughes kill, to erase at early 5-2 set two deficit. With the set tied at eight, Dominican committed a service error and started a 13-2 Philadelphia charge to put the Rams in front 21-10.
In the final set, Philadelphia fell behind 9-5 after a pair of Kelly Murphy service aces. The Rams, with the help of three kills from Wensel and Hughes and nine Dominican errors, outscored the Chargers 20-6 the rest of the way.
Kera Dexter and Ashley Joyner had four kills each for Dominican. Amanda Hallstein recorded a double-double with 10 assists and 10 digs.
