Box Score LAKEWOOD, N.J. – The Philadelphia University women's volleyball team had its 2015 season come to a close with a 25-18, 18-25, 18-25, 23-25 loss to Bloomfield in the semifinal round of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament Friday afternoon in the Georgian Court University Wellness Center.
Courtney Wensel (Bechtelsville, Pa./Berks Catholic) posted a match-high 20 kills, tying her career high, and added 13 digs, three service aces, and two block assists. Corinne Justus (Allentown, Pa./Emmaus) contributed 12 kills and two block assists.
In their final collegiate match, Chelsea Hughes (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) had 17 kills, Allison Manley (Saint Charles, Ill./Saint Charles East) posted 14 digs, and Nina Morvin (Willow Grove, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) recorded 41 assists and 10 digs.
Philadelphia—the southern division champion—finishes the season with a 21-7 overall record.
The Rams had advantages in kills (57-49), hitting percentage (.253-.245), and total blocks (7-5). However, Philadelphia had 11 service errors, six blocking errors, and six ball handling errors, compared to three service errors and five ball handling errors for Bloomfield.
In the opening set, the Rams outhit the Bears, .323 to .147. Philadelphia broke open a tight set with a 10-3 run to open up a 20-12 lead. After Bloomfield closed the gap to 22-17, Philadelphia took the set by scoring four of the final five points.
Bloomfield went on a 5-1 run to erase a one-point deficit and take a 12-9 set-two advantage. Coming out of a timeout called by Rams' head coach Tim Moyer, the Rams ran off three straight points to even the set at 17. Unfazed by the rally, the Bears would snap an 18-18 deadlock with seven points in a row to even the match.
A 5-0 Bloomfield run would be the key to the third set as the surge gave the Bears, who hit .344 in the set, a 15-8 cushion. Philadelphia was only able to get as close at 15-11.
The teams went back and forth in open the final set, swapping the lead three times and being tied on nine occasions. The Bears rattled off five points in a row to take a 14-11 lead. With the Bloomfield up to six (22-16), Moyer called Philadelphia's second timeout of the set. The Rams responded to Moyer's message, going on a 7-1 charge to even the set at 23 and forcing Bloomfield to take a timeout. The Bears came back out and scored the final two points to end the match.
Bloomfield, who will face Post for the CACC championship on Nov. 21, got 17 kills and nine digs from Dianmarie Rivera. Valerie Bermudez had 11 kills, while Samantha Rios added 26 digs.
