Box Score MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The Philadelphia University women's volleyball team knocked Millersville from the ranks of the unbeatens as the Rams came from 2-1 down to pick up a 3-2 victory in a non-conference match Tuesday night in Pucillo Gymnasium.
The Rams even their overall record at 4-4, while dropping the Marauders to 7-1. Philadelphia got off to fast start, winning the first set 25-22. Millersville took the next two sets 25-21 and 25-23 to move in front 2-1. The Rams forced a deciding set with a 25-19 set four triumph. In the final set, Philadelphia needed overtime, but earned the win by a 17-15 score.
Both teams hit .146 in an opening set that featured 12 ties and nine lead changes. With the score knotted up at 20, the Rams scored five of the final seven points to take a 1-0 match lead. Corinne Justus had two kills during the final surge, while Allison Manley added one. Philadelphia won the set on a block by Courtney Wensel and Lauren Laucella.
Millersville used a run of eight straight points to grab a 19-14 set two lead. The Rams closed the gap to 22-21 with four straight points, capped off by a Justus kill. The Marauders stopped the Rams' rally, winning the set's final three points.
After Philadelphia scored the first point of the third set, Millersville rattled off eight of the next nine points to storm out to an 8-2 lead. The Rams fought their way back into the set, eventually tying the score at 23 on a Wensel service. Despite the comeback, Millersville used two Philadelphia hitting errors to win the set.
Philadelphia posted a .130 hitting percentage in the fourth set, while holding Millersville to .042. A pair of Emily Pilla service aces capped a string of five straight points to give the Rams an 8-5 lead. The lead later grew to 21-13 thanks to an 8-2 surge. Four of the Rams' points came on Marauder attack errors.
The Rams never trailed in the final set, but had to fend off a 6-1 Marauder run that tied the score at 13. With the set tied even at 15, Philadelphia got a kill from Wensel for match point and Justus closed it out with a kill.
Philadelphia heads to the University of the Sciences for a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference match on Wednesday, Sept. 23 at 7:15 p.m.
