Women's volleyball extends streak with sweep of Goldey-Beacom

WILMINGTON, Del. – The Philadelphia University women's volleyball team extended its winning streak to five after picking up a 3-0 (26-24, 25-13, 25-14) Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) victory over host Goldey-Beacom Tuesday night in the Jones Center.

Philadelphia improves to 7-4 overall and 3-1 against the CACC, while Goldey-Beacom is now 4-8 overall, 0-5 in conference play. The Rams moved their string of consecutive wins over the Lightning to 20.

Courtney Wensel (Bechtelsville, Pa./Berks Catholic) and Lauren Laucella (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) paced the Philadelphia offense with 10 kills each. The 10 kills are a season high for Laucella, who finished the match with a .600 hitting percentage.

Allison Manley (Saint Charles, Ill./Saint Charles East) added seven kills and seven digs, while Becca Lutterschmidt (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) tied her career best of six kills.

Nina Morvin (Willow Grove, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) led the team with 17 assists and Michele Chai (Sinking Spring, Pa./Berks Catholic) had a match-best 15 digs.

Both teams performed very well offensively in the opening set—which featured 11 tied and three lead changes—as the Rams hit .371 and the Lightning posted a .306 hitting percentage. Philadelphia had to fend off one Goldey-Beacom set point at 24-23 with a Wensel kill. The Rams won the next two points, on kills by Olivia Manning (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) and Manley, to take the set.

Philadelphia never trailed in set two thanks to a quick 4-0 at the open. The Rams used a run of six consecutive points, three on Laucella kills, to turn a four-point lead (13-9) into a 10-point advantage (19-9). Philadelphia closed out the set, in which it hit .355, with five straight points.

In the final set, the Rams used a 13-5 surge midway through the set to grab a 19-8 cushion. Six different players had at least on kill for the Rams—who hit .333 in set three to earn the win.

Grace McCarthy led Goldey-Beacom 12 kills and five digs, while Olivia Florence added 19 assists and six digs.

Philadelphia returns home to face Holy Family in a CACC clash on Thursday, Oct. 1 at 6 p.m.
