Women's volleyball serves way past Cairn, 3-0

PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia University women's volleyball team opened the Tim Moyer era with a school record 30 service aces as the Rams recorded a 3-0 (25-6, 25-6, 25-4) victory over visiting Cairn Saturday afternoon in the Gallagher Center.

Setter Nina Morvin (Willow Grove, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) paced the strong Philadelphia (1-0) service game with nine service aces. She added five assists. Outside hitter Allison Manley (Saint Charles, Ill./Saint Charles East) filled up with stat line with seven service aces, four kills, and two digs.

In her first collegiate match, Courtney Wensel (Bechtelsville, Pa./Berks Catholic) contributed six service aces, five kills, and three digs. Middle hitter Lauren Laucella (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) added five kills to tie Wensel for the team lead.

The Rams opened the match with 12 service aces and eight kills in the first set. Daniela Cintron (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina) posted three consecutive service aces to give the Rams an 8-1 advantage. Later in the set, Morvin served seven points in a row—including five service aces—to increase the margin to 16-2.

Philadelphia hit .600 (7-1-10) to go along with seven aces in the set two victory. The Rams used a 6-0 run, including five straight kills, to turn a four-point set into a 14-4 cushion. After a service error gave a point to Cairn (0-2), Philadelphia rattled off another six points in a row, capped by a Manley kill, to make the gap 20-5. Morvin wrapped up the set with three straight service aces.

Manley got the Rams out to a 7-0 set three lead with five of the Rams' 11 service aces. Claudia Papola (Temple, Pa./Muhlenberg) added three aces during a string of 10 straight points to push the lead to 18-2. Wensel recorded aces on four of the last five points of the match to seal the win.

Haley Sheehan paced the Highlanders with two kills and three digs. Sara Walker added one kill for Cairn.

Philadelphia heads to Kutztown for the Kutztown Classic on Sept. 11-12. The Rams open the Classic against Southern New Hampshire on Sept. 11 at 5 p.m.
