Walk-Off Heroics by Hoyt, Akelaitis Give Softball A Sweep of Post

PHILADELPHIA – The Thomas Jefferson University softball team recorded walk-off hits in both games of its CACC doubleheader versus Post, earning 4-3 and 5-3 victories on Saturday. The Rams upped their record to 3-1 on the campaign.
 
GAME ONE – W, 4-3 (8 inn.)
The Rams struck first in the opening inning with Winnai Hoyt knocking in Julia Heine with a base hit for a 1-0 lead. Emily Akelaitis increased the advantage to 3-0 in the third with a two-run homer to left.
 
The Eagles pushed across three in the fourth with back-to-back home runs to tie the score. Neither team was able to pull ahead and the contest went to extra innings. In the eighth, Gianna DeLorenzo retired Post in order, giving Jefferson a chance to walk off with the win. Sam Gomez hit a single with one out and Hoyt followed with a game-winning triple to right field.

GAME TWO – W, 5-3
In the nightcap, the Rams scored again in the opening inning, this time sending three runs across the plate. Hoyt led off with a single and scored on a fielder's choice then Ellie Egher drove in a pair of runs with a base hit. The Eagles got one back in the second with a sac fly. Post cut it to one in the fourth on an error.
 
In the seventh, the Eagles tied the game on a solo shot to left field with one out. In the bottom of the frame, Hoyt started with a single and went to second on a sacrifice bunt. With one away, Akelaitis stepped up and belted a two-run bomb to left center, her second of the day, to give Jefferson its second walk-off win of the afternoon.
