Akelaitis's Grand Slam Highlights Softball's Sweep of Goldey-Beacom

PHILADELPHIA – The Thomas Jefferson University softball team won both games of a CACC doubleheader against visiting Goldey-Beacom on Tuesday. The sweep put the Rams at 11-5 on the year.

GAME ONE – W, 7-2
The Lightning scored the first run in the opening inning on an RBI single. Jefferson countered with a two-run first. Victoria Juckniewitz scored on an error and Emily Akelaitis came home on a fielder's choice. The Rams increased their lead to four (5-1) in the second. Cayla Kalani scored on a fielder's choice and Juckniewitz followed with an RBI triple. Juckniewitz touched the plate on a groundout.

Goldey-Beacom got a run back in the fourth with an RBI double but Jefferson scored again in the bottom half on Ali Murphy's RBI single to make it 6-2. The Rams' final run came across in the sixth with Akelaitis recording a sacrifice fly. Akelaitis also earned the win in the circle with Gianna DeLorenzo picking up her first save.

GAME TWO – W, 12-3 (5 inn.)
The Rams opened the scoring in the nightcap with Ali Murphy scoring on a fielder's choice in the first inning. In the second, Julia Heine plated two runs with a triple to right center and scored on an error to make it 4-0.

Jefferson pushed across four runs in the fourth. Breck Urban hit an RBI single to right, Emily Akelaitis drove in two with a base hit, and Anna Akelaitis came home on an error. The Lightning avoided an early ending due to the eight-run rule with a three-run fifth, benefitting from a run-scoring single and a two-run base hit.

However, the Rams got the necessary runs needed in the bottom of the inning. Heine singled to center with one out, Urban sent a base knock up the middle, and Ali Murphy had a bunt single to load the bases. Emily Akelaitis followed with a game-ending grand slam, her seventh homer of the season, for a 12-3 final score.
