PHILADELPHIA – The Thomas Jefferson University men's soccer team (5-4-2, 4-0-2 CACC) erased a second-half deficit and dealt first-place Bridgeport (7-3-1, 5-1 CACC) its first conference loss with a 2-1 win at Ravenhill Field on Friday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After the Rams recorded the first shot of the contest, the Purple Knights had an offensive attack that included a trio of shots, two on goal, and a corner kick within a two-minute span. Bridgeport had a slight 6-4 advantage in shots for the half as well as a 5-3 edge in corner kicks but the game remained scoreless at the intermission.
The Purple Knights came out strong to begin the second half, recording the first five shots of the period. Bridgeport's effort paid off with the opening goal in the 59
th minute after a cross from the left side was tapped into the cage.
The Rams picked up the offense, registering three shots in a row, and they netted the equalizer in the 65
th minute.
Mateo Infante dribbled to his right across the top of the box before kicking it back left to
Diego Guzman. Guzman fired a shot that got through the goalkeeper to even the score at one.
Jefferson found new energy from the tying goal and pressured the Bridgeport defense. The Rams clanged two shots off of the woodwork and another was cleared out of the goal mouth by the Purple Knights' back line. Jefferson could not be denied, however, as Guzman scored his second of the day to give the Rams a 2-1 edge in the 78
th minute. He turned around a defender and booted a shot around the goalie, who was cheating up towards the top of the box.
Bridgeport tried its best to even the score as time wound down, getting off four shots, but the lone volley on goal was turned away by
Matteo Crescente.
