Women's Soccer Upset By Caldwell In CACC Quarterfinals

PHILADELPHIA – The Thomas Jefferson University women's soccer team's quest for a fourth straight conference title came to an end on Monday as the second-seeded Rams (11-6-1) were upset by seventh-seeded Caldwell (7-7-4) in the quarterfinals of the CACC Tournament, 2-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Jefferson controlled possession in the first half but the Cougars had a 5-4 advantage in shots. Neither team was able to have a prolonged period of pressure with the opportunities coming sporadically throughout the opening 45 minutes.

The teams continued to go back and forth for the first 20 minutes of the second half with the Rams holding a slim 3-2 edge in shots. Caldwell was finally able to break through in the 70th minute, getting behind the Jefferson backline and finding the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.

The Cougars rode the momentum and scored again just two minutes later before the Rams could recover. Caldwell booted a shot from the top of the box off the right post and into the left side of the cage.

The Rams tried to rally and get back into the game with under 20 minutes left. Jefferson had a shot go off the crossbar and the score remained 2-0. However, the Rams drew a foul just inside the box in the 79th minute and Kiery Spatz converted the penalty kick to get Jefferson within one.

The Rams continued to pressure and were just inches away from tying the game in the 81st minute. A pass forward sprung Laural Erick into a one-on-one with the goalkeeper. Erick was able to get a shot past the charging goalie but it rolled into the left post. The Cougars' keeper turned away one more shot with less than a minute remaining and Caldwell held on for the victory.
