Late Goal Ends Men's Soccer's Season In CACC Quarterfinals at Wilmington

NEWARK, Del. – The Thomas Jefferson University men's soccer team (7-7-4) had its 2022 season come to an end on Tuesday with a 2-1 loss at Wilmington (10-4-5) in the quarterfinals of the CACC Tournament. The Rams were seeded fifth while the Wildcats are the fourth seed.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
Wilmington took a 1-0 lead just over four minutes into the contest after a wild sequence in front of the net. A corner kick was sent into the box and the Wildcats headed a shot off the crossbar. The rebound was headed towards the goal once more and struck the left post. Finally, Wilmington put the ball into the back of the cage off the second rebound.
 
Following the goal, the two sides traded shots for the next 25 minutes. The Rams broke through and evened the score in the 31st minute. Gabe Paz corralled the ball at midfield and sent a pass over the defense to Diego Guzman. Guzman dribbled around the goalkeeper and found the vacated net to tie the contest at one.
 
Wilmington picked up the pressure over the final minutes of the opening half, outshooting Jefferson 5-1, but the teams remained level into halftime. The Wildcats continued to dominate at the start of the second period by recording the first seven shots over the initial 14 minutes. However, just one attempt was on target and the score stayed at 1-1. Wilmington had another opportunity ring off the crossbar in the 68th minute.
 
Another Wildcats' flurry saw four shots in a seven-minute span, including one that was cleared out of the goalmouth by the Rams' defense. The Wilmington effort finally saw results with just under eight minutes remaining when the Wildcats knocked in a cross from the right side to take a 2-1 advantage. Jefferson got off two shots as time wound down but both were off the mark.
