PHILADELPHIA – The Thomas Jefferson University men's basketball team (15-5, 11-2 CACC) had its five-game win streak snapped with a 73-69 defeat to Goldey-Beacom at the Gallagher Center on Wednesday night.
GAMEPLAY
The teams went back and forth for the opening eight-plus minutes and found themselves in a 15-all deadlock with 11:35 on the clock. The Rams gained momentum with an 8-0 run to take a 23-15 lead. Four different players scored during the stretch. Jefferson nursed a six-point advantage (31-25) when the Lightning strung together five points to get within one. However, the Rams answered with six in a row to restore a seven-point margin (37-30). GBC then tallied the last six points of the period to make the score 37-36 at halftime.
The score was even at 43 early in the second half. The Lightning took control with six straight points. Jefferson cut the deficit to two (54-52) with 10:02 remaining. However, GBC did not allow the Rams to make consecutive baskets for the next seven minutes as the Lightning continued to hold the lead. Finally, a three-point play by
Deondre Bourne with 3:22 to go got Jefferson within one (62-61). Goldey-Beacom made a foul shot and a layup to increase the margin to four (65-61). The teams traded two points and the score was 67-63 (1:38).
After the Rams missed a bucket, the Lightning converted one free throw to make it a five-point game (68-63). Bourne drilled a three then GBC sank a pair of shots at the line to make the score 70-66. Bourne answered with another three-pointer to get Jefferson within one (70-69) with 23 seconds left. The Rams fouled and the Lightning made both shots to go ahead by three. Jefferson was off the mark on two three-point attempts and GBC added a free throw to ice the game.
