WILMINGTON, Del. – The Thomas Jefferson University men's basketball team (8-8, 4-2 CACC) suffered a 77-72 setback at Goldey-Beacom (6-10, 3-3 CACC) on Tuesday night.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Rams got out to a 7-1 advantage in the first half but the Lightning answered with 10 of the next 13 to go ahead 11-10 with 15:32 on the clock. The score was even at 14 at the 13:47 mark before GBC went on a 13-1 run, including 11 straight points, to take a 27-15 lead with 8:05 left. Jefferson was able to cut the deficit to five (37-32) late in the period but trailed 39-32 at halftime.
Hakim Byrd got the Rams started in the second half with a three-pointer to close the gap to four (39-35). However, the Lightning tallied the next five to create some distance between the two squads. Jefferson was able to narrow the deficit to five (46-41) with 16:13 remaining but GBC responded with an 8-0 surge to make it a 13-point game (54-41).
The Rams trailed by 10 (70-60) with 3:03 to play and got back in it with eight consecutive points to close to within two (70-68) with 1:14 to go. However, Jefferson came up empty on its next three possessions as the Lightning increased the margin to seven (75-68). The Rams broke their drought with seven seconds left but two free throws by GBC iced the game.
