MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The Thomas Jefferson University baseball team (0-1) had a late lead slip away as 19
th-ranked Millersville (3-1) walked it off in the ninth inning for a 6-5 victory in the Rams' season opener on Friday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Both teams stranded multiple runners on base in the opening frame. The Marauders then plated the first run of the contest in the second with a two-out RBI triple. The Rams did not take long to even it up, putting together a two-out rally in the third.
Jay Kalieta and
Josh Lopez recorded back-to-back singles to put runners on the corners. Kalieta then scored on an error to tie the game at one.
After Jefferson starter
Samuel Bass tossed a 1-2-3 bottom of the third,
Ryan Coyle led off the fourth with a home run to left to put the Rams in front, 2-1. Millersville tallied an unearned run on a fielder's choice in the fifth and the teams were even once more.
The Rams seized the advantage again with a two-run sixth, again with all the action coming with two outs. Coyle and
Diego Santiago both smacked a single and there were runners on first and second.
Dylan Rees then knocked in Coyle with a base hit to right for a 3-2 edge.
Gabe Silva followed with his first collegiate hit and RBI, driving home Santiago with a single through the right side, making the score 4-2.
Alec Baltz relieved Bass and hurled a perfect bottom of the sixth before Jefferson tacked on another run in the seventh. Lopez plated
Alex Gonzalez with a hit up the middle. However, the Marauders answered with a pair of runs on two RBI singles in the bottom of the seventh to close to within one (5-4).
It remained a one-run game entering the bottom of the ninth. After a strikeout, Millersville registered a single then an RBI triple to bring the game level at five. After an intentional walk and a strikeout, the Marauders scored the winning run on a 1-0 wild pitch.
