No.18 Baseball Stumbles in Second Day Against Wilmington

WILMINGTON, Del. - No.18 nationally-ranked Thomas Jefferson University baseball (38-14) had two errors and mistakes riddled in the game as they fell in the second day in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Tournament to host Wilmington University of Delaware (35-20) in Friday afternoon action.

WHAT HAPPENED

  • The game, originally started at 11 a.m., was delayed to 2:30 p.m. due to the weather

  • First three innings had four batters at plate at most with each team taking them down and keeping it scoreless. The host team Wildcats striked first as a pop up bunt to first was followed by a throwing error by the Rams allowed Wilmington to score and earn a 1-0 lead

  • Jefferson responded in the second as Javon Hernandez double to left center put a run on the board. A Thomas Matuszewski single to left field put Hernandez on third, giving him a chance to score on a Joshua Lopez sacrifice flyout to center field for the Rams to go up 2-1

  • The Wildcats tied it in the sixth on a grounded out to shortstop. The seventh is when the momentum changed with Wilmington scoring three runs off of a throwing error by second base and a two-run double to go up 5-2

  • Jefferson had one runner get to third in the eighth but did not capitalize on that potential score as the Rams dropped the second game in the CACC Tournament 5-2

  • Kevin Baez started for Jefferson, pitching seven innings in the loss with eight hits and five runs allowed, only two earned. He struck out two batters during his time on the mound
