Softball Takes Two Wins Against Virginia Union


RICHMOND, VA – Thomas Jefferson University softball (5-3) headed down to Richmond, Virginia as the Rams took on Virginia Union University (2-16) in a non-conference doubleheader. Jefferson escaped game one with a 7-5 victory while getting into their groove to down the Panther 7-0 in game two.

WHAT HAPPENED 
GAME ONE: W, 7-5 

  • Virginia Union jumped out to an early lead as they got a score off an out by the shortstop, going up 1-0 after the bottom of the first 

  • Kalina Childers tied the game with her homerun in the top of the second inning. Jefferson took the lead in the third off a Panthers' error, making it 2-1 

  • Liv Stevens went back-to-back in homeruns in the fourth and six inning, her first and second homerun in her career, making it 4-1 for the Rams. 

  • Virginia fought back and took the lead at the bottom of the sixth with a homerun, hit by pitch, and two-run single that made it 5-4 with the Panthers needing only three outs to take the win 

  • Jefferson refused to back down, scoring three runs at the top of the seventh as an error in the outfield turned the tide and score to 7-5 in favor of the Rams 

  • Two strikeouts and a fielder's choice concluded game one for Jefferson 

  • Delaney Alix pitched 5.1 innings, having five strikeouts on the mound. MaryKate Armstrong came in relief for the rest of the game to earn the win, pitching the final 1.2 innings with three strikes under her belt

GAME TWO: W, 7-0 

  • The Rams started strong in the second game as MacKenzie Ward nailed a two-run homerun in the first inning to get the momentum on their side. That was the first homerun of Ward's career. 

  • Stevens put another run up on a double to right field. Amariah McKnight turned it to a 5-0 game with her own two-run homerun to right field. McKnight joined Ward with her first collegiate homerun 

  • A pass ball got Ward home while Alyssa Bailey single to center field made the contest 7-0 in the Rams' favor at the top of the sixth. Jefferson would hold onto that lead the rest of the way for their second victory on the day 

  • Lauren Bernaiche secures the victory as she pitched 5.0 innings, giving up only two hits with five strikeouts. Bailey Maloney pitched the final two innings, striking out three batters while allowing one hit to end the game
