Philadelphia, PA- Philadelphia University head
men's basketball coach Herb Magee was inducted into the
Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame on Thursday, November
13th at the Hyatt Regency at Penn's Landing in
Philadelphia. Coach Magee was joined countless family
members, along with friends and supporters as he took the
stage for his induction speech.
"I'm an Irish-Catholic kid from West Philly, I went to the
greatest high school in the world, West Catholic high school.
I played there, I then went to Philadelphia Textile, I now coach at
Philadelphia University, and now I'm being inducted into the
Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame. It doesn't get much better than
that," said Coach Magee.
The other Class V inductees included: the 1929 World
Series Champion Philadelphia Athletics, Maurice Cheeks, Lionel
Simmons, Leroy Burrell, Stan Hochman, Fred Shero, Harold
Carmichael, Tommy Loughran, Mickey Vernon, Ed Delahanty, Dorothy
Porter and Al Wistert.
Magee enters his 42nd season at the helm of the Philadelphia
University basketball program in
2008-09. Magee has the second-most wins of any
NCAA Division II coach with 855 victories. He currently ranks
fourth in victories all-time in NCAA history, regardless of
division.
His most recent accolades are many and include: the 2007
NABC's Guardian of the Game Award, nominated for induction into the
Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006 and inducted
into the Philadelphia Area Small College Basketball Hall of
Fame in 2002.
