Senior infielder Janine Becker (pictured) drove in two runs with
two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning on Saturday afternoon,
giving the Philadelphia University softball team its first
conference win, a 6-5 victory over visiting Dominican College
on Saturday afternoon. The Chargers battled back for a 6-2 win in the second game of the day as the Lady
Rams move to 3-13 overall on the season and 1-3 in the Central
Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC).
Head Coach John Kelly's team took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of
the first inning on an RBI double by sophomore catcher Maggie
Desmond, but Dominican tallied once in the top of the second to tie
the game. In the bottom of the second, the Lady Rams took the
lead once again, this time on an RBI single by freshman outfielder
Jen Richard.
The Chargers tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the third before
scoring twice in the top of the fifth for a 5-3 advantage, setting
the stage for Becker's heroics. The Lady Rams pulled to
within one run at 5-4 in the bottom of the sixth when senior
outfielder Maureen Keenan registered an RBI double that plated
sophomore Kelly Rauco. After senior right hander Jacque
Curtis set the Chargers down in order in the top of the seventh,
Becker delivered a bases-loaded double that won the game, scoring
Desmond and sophomore Kristin Giamatteo.
In the second contest, the Chargers jumped out to a 5-0 lead
after three innings and never looked back. Richard and Keenan
each collected a pair of hits in a losing effort for the Lady Rams,
who return to action on Wednesday, April 2nd with a doubleheader at
league-foe Georgian Court University.
