Lady Rams Raise League Record to .500 Mark With Sweep of Griffins

Head Coach John Kelly's softball team earned their ninth and tenth Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) victories of the season with a pair of wins over Chestnut Hill College on the School House Lane field this afternoon.  The Lady Rams are now 14-24 overall and 10-10 in CACC action.

The 10 wins in conference play are the most since the program joined the CACC prior to the 2006 season.  Their .500 record in league games this late in the season is easily Philadelphia University's best performance in Coach Kelly's three-year tenure.  With four games remaining on their conference slate, the Lady Rams are still alive for a postseason CACC Tournament berth.

In today's first game, senior pitcher Jacque Curtis worked the complete seven innings, scattering eight hits and yielding just one run while striking out six Griffins to pick up her team-leading eighth win of the year as the Lady Rams edged Chestnut Hill, 2-1.

The Philadelphia University scoring was provided courtesy of a second-inning, two-run home run off the bat of sophomore third baseman Kristyn Loughery (pictured).  It was a two-out connection after fellow sophomore, designated player Kristin Giamatteo, led off the inning with a base hit and was sacrificed to second by sophomore right fielder Kelly Rauco.  After Janine Becker flied out to center, Loughery came through for the only runs that Curtis needed to secure the win, as Philadelphia University was held to just four hits by Griffins' right-hander Kaitlin McKeever.  McKeever previously defeated the Lady Rams with a three-hitter back on March 13 at Chestnut Hill.

In the nightcap, the Lady Rams jumped all over the visitors with a five-run first inning and never looked back in notching a 9-1 win as the game was shortened by the eight-run rule.  Freshman right-hander Randi Wozniak gave up just three hits and one earned run in the five innings needed to register her third win of the year.

Jen Richard and Maggie Desmond both went 3-for-3 in the second game, Richard with two runs scored and two RBI; and Desmond with one run scored and three RBI.  Loughery continued her fine day at the plate by going 2-for-2 to finish the day 3-for-4 with two runs scored, two RBI, a double and the big home run.

Next for the softball team will be a key 3:00 p.m. doubleheader at home on Thursday, April 24 as the Lady Rams host their CACC foes from the University of the Sciences.
