Senior Jacque Curtis and sophomore Maggie Desmond (pictured) led
the Philadelphia University softball team to a doubleheader sweep
of Bloomfield College on the road on Sunday afternoon. Curtis
earned the win on the mound in the opening game and also hit a
homerun while Desmond hit two homeruns on the day for the Lady
Rams, who improve to 5-15 overall and 3-5 in the Central Atlantic
Collegiate Conference (CACC) with the sweep.
In the opener, the Lady Rams took a 1-0 lead in the top of the
fourth inning on a homerun by Curtis, the tenth of her
career. Head Coach John Kelly's team added four runs in the
top of the sixth inning to take control, highlighted by Desmond's
two-run homerun off Deacons' starter Brianne Moore. Curtis
then took over, allowing just five hits and collecting five
strikeouts in picking up the complete-game shutout as the Lady Rams
took the 5-0 decision.
In the second game, the Lady Rams jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the
top of the third inning as senior outfielder Maureen Keenan and
Curtis registered RBI doubles while sophomore designated hitter
Kristin Giamatteo added a sacrifice fly to extend the lead.
However, the Deacons tallied three times in the bottom of the sixth
inning to tie the game, but Kelly's team answered the bell once
again. The Lady Rams scored four times in the top of the
seventh inning as Desmond accounted for three runs with a three-run
homerun, her second of the day. Freshman pitcher Randi
Wozniak earned her first career collegiate win on the mound, going
the distance while striking out six in the 7-3 victory.
Philadelphia University will look to extend its winning streak in
its next outing, hosting Wilmington University on Tuesday, April
8th.
