Bloomfield, NJ- The Philadelphia University
softball team (7-8, 0-2 CACC) fell in a conference doubleheader 4-3
and 5-2 at Bloomfield College (11-4, 2-0 CACC) on Sunday
afternoon.
Junior third baseman Kristin Giamatteo
(Bellmore, NY/Wellington Mepham H.S.) smacked a two-run single in
the first inning of game one to give the Lady Rams a quick 2-0
lead, and freshman infielder Katie Renner
(Berryville, VA/ Brunswick HS) scored on a fielder's choice in the
top of the third to go ahead 3-0. Giamatteo went 4-5 at the
plate on the day.
That would be all the offense PhilaU could generate as the
Deacons singled in a run in the sixth and then exploded for three
runs on three hits to steal the game in the final inning.
PhilaU's freshman pitcher Ali Schmidt (Cordova,
MD/ Easton) took the loss in 6.2 innings of work- striking out nine
batters and allowing four runs.
In game two, the Deacons struck first with an RBI-double in the
first inning, but PhilaU was helped by Giamatteo again as she hit
pay dirt with a two-run single to put her team up 2-1.
However, BC scored four runs off four hits, including a two-RBI
double in the bottom of the fourth to take a 5-2 lead that would be
the final score.
Schmidt took her second loss of the day for the Lady Rams, who
went four innings and struck out four. PhilaU sophomore
hurler Randi Wosniak (Newtown Square, PA/Marple
Newtown H.S.) came in relief and threw two innings, allowing no
runs and just one hit.
PhilaU returns to action in their home-opener on Tuesday, March
24th vs. Felician in a doubleheader beginning at 2:30
p.m.
