Freshmen Key Softball in 2-1 Extra Inning Game over #16 Nationally-Ranked Georgian Court

Philadelphia, PA- The Philadelphia University softball team (11-12, 4-6 CACC) split with the #16 nationally-ranked Georgian Court University Lions (18-8, 6-2 CACC) in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) action on Thursday afternoon on Bucky Harris Field.  PhilaU won 2-1 in 11 innings in the first game- the first-ever win for PhilaU over GCU under head coach John Kelly. 

In game one, PhilaU overtook the Lions as Lady Ram freshman catcher Katie Renner (Berryville, VA/ Brunswick) smacked a single to score the game-winner 2-1 in the bottom of the 11th inning. 

Earlier in the game, GCU took a 1-0 lead off a round-tripper from Stephanie Cuevas.  The Lady Rams tied it up in the bottom of the sixth on freshman Danielle Parisi's (Teaneck, NJ/ W. Windsor-Plainsboro) first collegiate hit- a home run.  

PhilaU outhit the Lions 5-3 as freshman pitcher Ali Schmidt (Cordova, MD/ Easton) had 21 strikeouts in the complete game.  GCU hurler Diana Sanserva also had 21 sit downs in 10.2 innings.

In the second game the Lady Rams took a 1-0 lead in the third inning as freshman Sara Romano (Harrisburg, PA/ Central Dauphin) scored on a passed ball after reaching on a fielder's choice.  The Lions came back in the fourth as Jessica Comiskey knocked out a two-run triple to give GCU a 2-1 edge.

GCU continued their offensive in the fifth, getting four runs off five hits to pull ahead 6-1.  The Lady Rams got a two-run double from junior third baseman Kristin Giamatteo (Bellmore, NY/ Wellington Mepham) to close the gap 6-3 in the sixth, and Giamatteo followed suit with another double in the seventh but that would be it for PhilaU as GCU took the 6-3 win.   

PhilaU freshman pitcher Amber Beauchemin (Galloway, NJ/ Absegami) took the loss in 6.2 innings, while GCU hurler Samantha Sasko took the win throwing a complete game for the Lions. 

The Lady Rams game schedule for Saturday (4/4) at St. Thomas Aquinas College has been postponed, so the team will resume action on Sunday (4/5) at C.W. Post College for a 12:00 p.m. doubleheader.
