Philadelphia, PA- The Philadelphia University
softball team (19-18, 10-10 CACC) got a conference sweep over Holy
Family University (15-25, 8-8 CACC) with 2-1 and 1-0 wins on
Thursday afternoon. Freshman pitcher Ali
Schmidt (Cordova, MD/ Easton) tossed two complete games
and compiled 22 strikeouts on the day.
In game one, the Lady Rams struck in the third inning as
sophomore outfielder Jen Richard (Millstone Twp.,
NJ/ Allentown) tripled to right field and was brought in on an RBI
single by junior outfielder Kristyn Loughery
(Phoenixville, PA/ Phoenixville) to take a 1-0 lead. Loughery
went 3-3 at the plate in the contest.
PhilaU added the game-winning run in the bottom of the fifth
inning as Loughery smacked a double and was brought in with by a
long double to center field from freshman catcher Katie
Renner (Berryville, VA/ Brunswick).
HFU got their lone run on a single by junior pitcher Shauna
Searfoss in the sixth, but that would be it as PhilaU held on for
the 2-1 win.
Game two was locked in a 0-0 tie until the bottom of the ninth
inning as junior third baseman Kristin Giamatteo
(Bellmore, NY/ Wellington Mepham) hit the game-winning single to
center field to bring in Loughery and win it 1-0. Another
highlight for the Lady Rams was Schmidt's first hit of the season-
a double to right field in the eighth inning.
The sweep puts the Lady Rams in fifth-place in the CACC
standings. The team will need to stay in the top eight through the
finish of the regular season to qualify for the CACC Tournament on
April 30th-May 2nd at Georgian Court
University.
