Newtown, PA- The Philadelphia University softball team (12-16, 6-10 CACC) took down Holy Family University (5-19, 2-6 CACC) twice 5-0 and 4-2 in nine innings for a clean sweep on Monday afternoon.
In the first game, PhilaU scored four unearned runs with help from seven HFU fielding errors. The Ram's lone earned run came in the first inning on junior catcher Katie Renner's RBI double to score freshman outfielder Devin Griglik-who had reached on a walk. PhilaU junior hurler Ali Schmidt tossed nine strikeouts in the contest to improve to 8-8, while HFU's Rachel Alligood went to 2-2.
Game two started a bit differently for PhilaU, as HFU went up 1-0 in the third on an RBI single. The Rams came back in the seventh on an RBI double by freshman infielder Meaghan Lewis to score Renner (who had reached on a double) and then senior outfielder Jen Richard knocked Lewis in on an RBI single. HFU sent the game into extra frames with an RBI groundout tied at 2-2.
In the ninth, PhilaU won it with two runs on HFU fielding errors and held on for the 4-2 victory. On the rubber, PhilaU's Schmidt improved to 9-8 with seven strikeouts while HFU's Samantha Borelli (1-4) allowed two earned runs.
Next up for the Rams will be a non-conference doubleheader vs. West Chester University on Wednesday (4/13) at 2:30 p.m.
