Women's tennis earns wins over Caldwell and Post

PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia University women's tennis team defeated Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) opponents Caldwell, 8-1, and Post, 9-0, Sunday afternoon at the Legacy Youth Tennis Education Center Sunday afternoon.

With the two victories, Philadelphia improves to 10-4 and 4-3 in CACC play. The wins also setup a home showdown with Holy Family on Tuesday, Oct. 15 at 3 p.m. for the fourth and final spot in the CACC Tournament.

The Rams opened the day by completing its suspended match with the Cougars (1-10, 1-6 CACC) from a week ago. Leading 3-0 at the time of the suspension, Philadelphia won five singles matches on Sunday to take the win.

Senior Isabela Espinosa (Quito, Ecuador/Colegio Americano de Quito) and freshman Emily Chung (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Mira Costa) were victorious at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively, by a score of 6-3, 6-0. Junior Olivia Amato (Hartford, Conn./Cheshire) cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win in the No. 3 match against Sara Riccardi. In the No. 4 match, freshman Anna Slomowitz (Glen Mills, Pa./Garnet Valley) knocked off Nicole Caneo 6-0, 6-2. Junior Magill Kurts (Burlington, N.J./Burlington Ciy) took the No. 5 match by defeating Koumudi Thirunagaru, 6-2, 6-1.

Against Post (0-10, 0-7 CACC), the No. 1 doubles team of freshman Naia Bengoa (Caracas, Venezula/San Ignacio de Loyola) and senior Sayre Limburg (New London, N.H./Proctor Academy) and the No. 2 duo of junior Sylvia Bennicelli (Lansdale, pa./Lansdale Catholic) and senior Elizabeth Verbits (Salisbury, Md./James M. Bennett) won their matches by an 8-0 score.

In singles, Bengoa, Limburg, freshman Daniela Rosen (Boonton Twp., N.J./Mountain Lakes), and freshman Mariana Sampaio (Brusque, Brazil/Colegio Consul Carlos Renaux) were all 6-0, 6-0 winners. Benniceli took the No. 3 singles match against Rebecca Erb 6-0, 6-1.
