Men's tennis knocks off St. Thomas Aquinas, 7-2, for first win of year

PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia University men's tennis team picked up its first win of the 2013-14 season as it knocked off visiting St. Thomas Aquinas, 7-2, in a non-conference match Sunday afternoon on the Abraham Salaman Tennis Courts.

The Rams snapped their three-match losing streak and improve to 1-3 overall. St. Thomas Aquinas is now 1-3.

Philadelphia jumped out to a 3-0 victory with a sweep of doubles action. The Rams' top duo of junior Nail Rachidi (Meknes, Morocco/Emile Anouar) and sophomore Houston Ward (Bristow, Va./Stonewall Jackson) defeated Javier Munoz and Inigo Aldekoa, 8-6. Junior Bobby Vo (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton Area) and sophomore Dylan Bhaerman (Columbus, Ohio/Pickerington North) were 8-6 winners in No. 2 doubles action against Alex Privalov and Thomas Schumann.

Senior Ayman Barakat (Kharkiv, Ukraine/Kharkiv Specialized English School #3) and sophomore Chris Casamassima (Franklin Square, N.Y./St. Mary's) took the No. 3 match by default.

Rachidi earned his second point of the match as he claimed the No. 3 singles match against Dan Maysonet, 6-4, 6-3. In the No. 4 match, Casamassima took out Privalov 6-0, 6-0. Vo picked up his second win of the day with a 6-3, 6-3 triumph over Schumann in the No. 5 match.

Freshman Juan Velosa (Bogota, Columbia/Gimnasio Campestre San Rafael) won the No. 6 singles match by default.

Philadelphia closes out its fall schedule with a home non-conference match against Division I Rider on Tuesday, Oct. 8 at 3 p.m.
