Cantrell's walk-off gives Rams doubleheader split with Concordia (N.Y.)

PHILADELPHIA – Freshman first baseman Emilia Cantrell's (Pipersville, Pa./Central Bucks E.) one-out RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning gave the Philadelphia University softball team a 5-4 walk-off game one win and give the Rams a split of their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader with visiting Concordia (N.Y.) on Saturday afternoon. The Clippers won game two, 4-3.

Following a ground out to open the home half of the eighth, freshman designated player Mollie Burrell (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton Area) draw a walk and was pinch run for by freshman Valerie Tully (Fairfield, N.J/West Essex Regional). Tully moved to second base on a single by sophomore pitcher Samantha Abromavage (Lake Hopatcong, N.J./Jefferson Twp.). Cantrell brought Tully home by driving a Theresa Magnani offering to right field.

Trailing 1-0 in the second, sophomore third baseman Andrea Schell (Glen Gardner, N.J./Voorhees) drove a pitch over the left field fence for her third home run of the year and tied the game at one.

The Rams (10-10, 3-3 CACC) plated three more runs in the fourth to take a 4-1 advantage. Burrell, Cantrell, and sophomore left fielder Emma Haley (Jensen Beach, Fla./Jensen Beach) each had a RBI single.

Concordia (2-9, 1-1 CACC) closed within one on a Laura Brezovsky sacrifice fly and a Hannah Rubansky single in the fifth. One inning later, Brittany Lampert's infield base hit tied the game at four.

In the circle, Abromavage struck out five in eight innings of work to earn for fourth win of the year. She allowed four runs—three earned—on 10 hits. Magnani gave up five earned runs on 10 hits and fanned two in 7.1 innings.

In the nightcap, Burell snapped a two-all tie with a sacrifice fly to left that scored freshman pitcher Kasia Smith (Waddell, Ariz./Estrella Foothills) in the bottom of the sixth.

In the top of the seventh, Concordia managed to earn three walks to load the bases. With two outs, Kristina Patrocinio came up with the eventual game-winning hit, a two-run single to center, and put the Clippers ahead 4-3.

Abromavage went 2-for-3 at the plate, including an RBI single in the second to give Philadelphia a 1-0 lead.

Patrocinio was 2-for-4 in the game and finished with two RBIs.

Rubansky was the winning pitcher as she scattered seven hits in seven innings and gave up three runs—two earned. Smith took the loss. She struck out two and gave up four runs on eight hits.

Philadelphia goes back to non-conference play as it hosts Bloomsburg in a doubleheader on Sunday, March 24 at noon.
