Box Score 2 MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The Philadelphia University softball team was swept by host Millersville in a non-conference doubleheader, 2-0 and 2-1 in eight innings, Saturday afternoon.
In the first game, the Rams (10-16) outhit the Marauders (19-7), 7-6, led by freshman Renee Kakareka (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg) who was 2-for-3.
Millersville pushed both of its runs across in the first inning on a Gabbie Berry single and a Cara Nance sacrifice bunt.
Jordan Sheffield had three of Millersville's six hits.
Sarah Bertoni struck out two while throwing seven shutout innings to earn the win. Sophomore pitcher Samantha Abromavage (Lake Hopatcong, N.J./Jefferson Twp.) fanned three and allowing two runs—one earned—in six innings for the Rams.
Game two was scoreless until the top of the sixth inning when freshman pitcher Kasia Smith (Waddell, Ariz./Estrella Foothills) helped her own cause with a two-out single that scored junior second baseman Meaghan Lewis (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Valley).
The Marauders got the run back in the bottom of the sixth on a Brianna Andraos base hit.
In the eighth, Berry led off by sacrificing courtesy runner Danielle DiFilippo to third. The next hitter, Jamie Motsko, hit a ground ball that was booted allowing DiFilippo to score.
Andraos allowed one run on five hits over eight innings to get the win. Smith was the hard-luck loser after giving up two runs—one earned—on six hits in 7.1 innings.
Sophomore third baseman Andrea Schell (Glen Gardner, N.J./Voorhees) had two of the Rams' five hits.
Philadelphia returns to action with a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader against the University of the Sciences on Monday, April 1 at 2:30 p.m.
