Rams swept by Bloomfield; Earn eighth seed in CACC Tournament

BLOOMFIELD, N.J. – The Philadelphia University softball team was swept by host Bloomfield, 5-0 and 4-3, in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader Saturday afternoon. Despite the sweep, the Rams earned a spot in the CACC Tournament.

The Rams end the regular season with an overall record of 19-29 and a conference mark of 9-17. Thanks to Felician and Concordia (N.Y.) getting swept, Philadelphia slid into the eighth spot for the CACC Tournament. The Rams will face top-seed Dominican (N.Y.) in the opening round on Thursday, May 2 at 10 a.m.

Bloomfield is 20-19 and earned the seventh seed for the CACC Tournament with a 12-14 mark.

In the first game, freshman first baseman Emilia Cantrell (Pipersville, Pa./Central Bucks E.), sophomore shortstop Stephanie Martin (Hanover, Md./Seton Keough), junior third baseman Meaghan Lewis (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Valley), and sophomore left fielder Emma Haley (Jensen Beach, Fla./Jensen Beach) all had one hit for the Rams.

Bloomfield got on the board with a Kalla Dugger solo home run in the fourth. The Deacons tacked on four more runs in the fifth on an Alexandria Smith two-run homer and a Lindsey Ciresa two-RBI single.

Ally Schraer struck out one during the complete-game victory. Freshman starter Kasia Smith (Waddell, Ariz./Estrella Foothills) fanned three in three innings in a losing effort. Freshman reliever Samantha Corey (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) posted two strikeouts over the final three innings.

In the nightcap, Philadelphia took a 1-0 lead on a Haley fielder's choice in the second inning to plate Smith, who singled to open the inning.

Bloomfield tied the game on an Alexandria Smith homer in the third and took a 3-1 lead in the fourth when Ciresa went deep.

Smith pulled the Rams within one with a fifth-inning double to plate junior centerfielder Samantha Riabko (Haddon Twp., N.J./Haddon Twp.).

After Bloomfield got the run back in the sixth, freshman catcher Mollie Burrell (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton Area) drove in Philadelphia's third run with a fielder's choice.

Smith finished the game with three of Philadelphia's six hits, while Riabko went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

Alexandria Smith went 2-for-3 at the plate and struck out three batters in five innings, while allowing two runs on four hits, in the circle to get the win.

Dugger went the final two innings to get the save.

Sophomore pitcher Samantha Abromavage (Lake Hopatcong, N.J./Jefferson Twp.) struck out one batter over six innings for the Rams.
