Rams slug way to doubleheader split with Georgian Court

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

PHILADELPHIA – Sophomore third baseman Andrea Schell (Glen Gardner, N.J./Voorhees) hit a grand slam in the bottom of the third to give the Philadelphia University softball team a 4-3 lead and the Rams carried that momentum the rest of the way to earn a 9-4 game two win over Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) opponent Georgian Court on Friday. The Lions took the first game, 8-2.

Philadelphia's record is now 12-20 overall and 4-8 in the CACC. Georgian Court goes to 16-18 and 8-4 in the conference.

The Rams trailed 3-0 heading into the bottom of the third. Freshman right fielder Renee Kakareka (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg) led off the frame with a base hit back up the middle. After an error allowed sophomore left fielder Stephanie Martin (Hanover, Md./Seton Keough) to reach safely, junior second baseman Meaghan Lewis (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Valley) loaded the bases with a single.

With two outs in the inning and the bases still loaded, Schell drilled an Illiana Teran offering over the left field fence to put the Rams in the lead. It was her second home run of the day, and fourth of the year.

Philadelphia tacked on four more runs in the fourth thanks to a two-run double from Lewis and two wild pitches with runners on third to extend the lead to 8-3.

Freshman pitcher Kasia Smith (Waddell, Ariz./Estrella Foothills) was the beneficiary of the run support and earned her fifth win of the year. In seven innings, she struck out four and gave up four runs—one earned—on 11 hits. Teran took the loss after surrendering seven runs—three earned—on seven hits.

Lewis and Schell each had two hits for the Rams. For Georgian Court, Dara Schroeder was 4-for-4 and scored three times, and Meghan Sfraga went 3-for-4 with an RBI single in the first, third, and seventh.

In the first game, Schell gave the Rams a 1-0 lead with a solo home run to center field with one down in the bottom of the second inning.

After Georgian Court scored single runs in the third and fourth, the Lions plated four runs in the fifth to take a 5-1 lead. Justine Mattia connected for a three-run home run and Taylor McDonough produced a RBI single during the fifth.

The Lions pushed across another run in the sixth and one more in the seventh.

Martin drove in Philadelphia's second run with a RBI single to plate Kakareka.

Martin, Lewis, and freshman designated player Mollie Burrell (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton Area) all had two hits for Philadelphia, who recorded eight as a team.

Briana Molino led the 10-hit Lions attack with a 3-for-4 effort.

Kristina Morgan was the winning pitcher as she struck out six in a complete-game effort. Sophomore starter Samantha Abromavage (Lake Hopatcong, N.J./Jefferson Twp.) took the loss after allowing six runs—three earned—on seven hits in 4.1 innings. Abromavage struck out two.

Philadelphia travels to Nyack for a CACC doubleheader on Saturday, April 6 starting at 3 p.m.
