Box Score 2 PHILADELPHIA – A seven-run sixth inning in game one and a five-run second inning in game two allowed the Philadelphia University softball team to sweep visiting Felician, 7-2 and 5-4, in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader Sunday afternoon.
Philadelphia is now 11-1 overall, 2-0 in the CACC, and Felician dips to 6-11 overall and 0-2 in conference play.
Senior second baseman Meaghan Lewis (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Valley) led the Rams' offense with three hits in five at-bats, five RBIs, and two runs scored. Sophomore right fielder/pitcher Kasia Smith (Waddell, Ariz./Estrella Foothills) was 3-for-7 and scored a run.
GAME ONE
Philadelphia had only one hit and trailed 2-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning before exploding with seven runs on seven hits.
Lewis and Smith starting the inning with singles and executed a double steal to advance to third and second, respectively. Junior starting pitcher Nicole Troisi (Norristown, Pa./Pope John Paul II) helped her own cause with a one-out double into right field to plate Lewis and Smith to tie the game at two.
After sophomore catcher Mollie Burrell (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton Area) singled to put runners at the corners, freshman left fielder Shannon Weaver came through with a deep sacrifice fly to left to bring home Troisi and put Philadelphia ahead 3-2.
Junior shortstop Stephanie Martin (Hanover, Pa./Seton Keough) tacked on two more runs with a double to right-center field to increase the advantage to 5-2. Lewis capped off the frame with a two-run double, her second hit in the inning, to make it a 7-2 affair.
Troisi, the beneficiary of the big inning, earned the complete-game victory, allowing two unearned runs on three hits and fanned three.
Sophomore designated player Renee Karakera (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg) and Lewis each went 2-for-3.
Felician took a 1-0 lead in the first on a Mercedes Montanez bases-loaded RBI groundout. The gap grew to 2-0 on a dropped fly ball off the bat of Ciera Clark in the fifth.
Chelsea DeGuzman had two of Felician's three hits.
Tori Bradburn was the losing pitcher as she gave up five runs on six hits and walked four in 5.2 innings.
GAME TWO
The Golden Falcons got out to another early advantage with a two-run home run by Clark to left-center field in the top of the first inning.
Philadelphia opened the home half of the second inning by getting walks from Weaver and Karakera, and junior left fielder Emma Haley reaching on an error.
Freshman third baseman Meghan Loughery (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville Area) was able to immediately pounce with a line-drive back through the box to bring home Kakareka and Haley to tie the game. One hitter later, Lewis drove a home run over the left field fence to clear the bases and put the Rams in front 5-2.
The Golden Falcons pulled within 5-3 in the fifth on a two-out bases-loaded walk by Amanda Lopez. Clark cut the Philadelphia lead to 5-4 with a solo home run to lead off the seventh.
Loughery and Smith both went 2-for-4 at the plate in the win for Philadelphia. In the circle, Smith fanned eight batters to earn the victory. She allowed four runs, three earned, on seven hits in seven innings.
For Felician, Clark was 3-for-3.
Macy Chase struck out three hitters in six innings in a losing effort.
Philadelphia gets right back to work with a CACC doubleheader at Goldey-Beacom on Monday, March 24 at 2:30 p.m.
