Box Score 2 WATERBURY, Conn. – The Philadelphia University softball team was swept by Post University in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader, 3-0 and 6-1, Saturday afternoon on LaMoy Field.
The Rams are now 20-11 overall and 10-9 in the CACC, while the Eagles improve to 19-17 overall and 15-5 against the conference
GAME ONE
The Eagles' Kaitlin Derby was the star of the opening contest as she allowed just two hits and struck out five over seven innings of work to earn the complete game victory.
Sophomore pitcher Kasia Smith (Waddell, Ariz./Estrella Foothills) was the only Ram to reach second base in the contest. Smith singled with two outs in the sixth and went to second when freshman third baseman Meghan Loughery was hit by a pitch.
Kayla Kresley got the Eagles on the board in the third by hitting a home run to left field with Erica Ragazzone on first to put the home team in front 2-0.
One inning later, Jackie Bonamassa had a RBI infield single with the bases loaded to bring Casey Sclafani home for Post's third run.
Christina Udris, Bonamassa, and Sclafani all had two hits for Post. Sophomore right fielder Renee Karakera (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg) recorded Philadelphia's other hit.
Smith (6-4) took the loss, scattering nine hits and striking out five in six innings.
GAME TWO
The Eagles built up a 6-0 lead over the first six innings of play in the nightcap.
Post scored singles runs in the first and third on a Stephanie DeMartino sacrifice fly and a Rebecca Erb RBI single, respectively.
In the fourth, the Eagles extended their lead to 5-0 as they got RBI hits from Bonamassa and Natalie Lennox, and a wild pitch with Bonamassa on third base.
Ragazzone was responsible for the Eagles' final run by coming through with a two-out RBI single to center in the sixth.
The Rams strung together three hits in the top of the seventh to get on the scoreboard. After Smith led off the inning with a double and junior relief pitcher Nicole Troisi (Norristown, Pa./Pope John Paul II) singled to put runners at first and third, junior starting pitcher/designated player Samantha Abromavage (Lake Hopatcong, N.J./Jefferson Twp.) singled to left to knock in Smith for the run.
Philadelphia recorded seven hits in the second game, led by two hits each from Smith and Abromavage.
Bonamassa was 2-for-2 with three runs scored, while Erb went 2-for-3 for the Eagles.
Derby picked up her second complete-game win of the day (9-3), striking out one.
Abromavage allowed five runs on six hits in 3.1 innings and took the loss (4-2).
Philadelphia returns home to face Nyack in a CACC doubleheader on Monday, April 21 at 2:30 p.m. With the cancellation of the Bridgeport doubleheader, the team will have its Senior Day ceremony before game one against the Warriors.
