Softball falls twice to Dominican (N.Y.)

ORANGEBURG, N.Y. – The Philadelphia University softball team capped off its run of six games in three days with a pair of losses to host Dominican (N.Y.) Wednesday afternoon. The Chargers took game one—a rescheduled Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) game—8-0 in five and won the second game—a non-conference game—4-3.

Philadelphia is now 24-13 overall and 14-10 in the CACC. With the sweep, Dominican improves to 15-22 overall, 12-10 against the conference

GAME ONE
Philadelphia managed just two hits off of Dominican's Kimberly Ragazzo, a single from junior shortstop Stephanie Martin (Hanover, Md./Seton Keough) in the first and a base hit by freshman first baseman Gabrielle Brown (Shillington, Pa./Governor Mifflin in the second.

Ragazzo  (7-7) faced two batters over the minimum as she struck out four and walked one over the five innings. At the plate, she helped her own cause with two hits, including a two-run home run in a four-run second inning.

Lisa Bouffard went 3-for-3 with four RBIs for the Chargers. She opened the scoring with a two-run home run in the second and ended the game with a two-run single in the fifth.

Ariana Trembone hit into a RBI fielder's choice in the third and Elontray Collins added a RBI single in the fourth inning.

Sophomore pitcher Kasia Smith (Waddell, Ariz./Estrella Foothills) struck out four and allowed eight runs, six earned, on 10 hits in 4.1 innings.

GAME TWO
Led by a pair of three-hit efforts from freshman third baseman Meghan Loughery  (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville Area) and Brown, Philadelphia outhit Dominican, 13-6.

Smith was able to circle the bases with two outs in the top of the third to give Philadelphia a 1-0 lead. She kept the inning alive with a two-out single. Then, Smith went to second when sophomore first baseman Mollie Burrell (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton Area) was hit by a pitch and advanced to third on a Loughery single. Smith came home on a wild pitch by Emily Larsen.

Dominican answered back with three in the bottom half of the inning to grab a 3-1 lead. Ragazzo knocked in the first two runs with a double to center and Collins brought in the third run with a sacrifice bunt.

Philadelphia took advantage of a lead-off error in the sixth inning to score a pair of unearned runs and tie the game at three. Senior center fielder Samantha Riabko (Haddon Twp., N.J./Haddon Twp.) each had a RBI single in the frame.

In the bottom of the inning, Elizabeth Hogan hit a lead-off home run to put the Chargers in front 4-3.

Philadelphia left 14 runners on base, including leaving the bases loaded in the second, third, and sixth innings.

Hogan ended up as the winning pitcher (6-9) with 1.2 innings of scoreless relief and two strikeouts.

Sophomore pitcher Renee Karakera (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg) suffered the loss. She had three strikeouts in six innings.

Philadelphia ends the regular season with a CACC doubleheader on Saturday, April 26 at Concordia (N.Y.) starting at 1 p.m.
