Women's tennis back on track with win over Caldwell

PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia University women's tennis team is back in the win column after defeating Caldwell 8-1 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) match Saturday afternoon at the Legacy Youth Tennis Education Center.

Philadelphia snapped its two-match skid while improving to 6-2 overall, 3-2 against the CACC. Caldwell dips to 3-8 overall, 0-5 in conference play.

The Rams got off to a fast start by sweeping the three doubles matches. Julia Arruda (Valinhos, Brazil/Anglo Coc Valinhos) and Jala Hamada (Giza, Egypt/Dar El-Tarbia, IGCSE) picked up their fifth win at No. 1 doubles with an 8-4 win over Tamara Klimek and Emily Slater. Emily Chung (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Mira Costa) and Anna Kudriavtceva (Yekaterinburg, Russia/Grammar School No. 13) were 8-0 winners against Claudia Romano and Rebecca Ryan at No. 2 to go to 4-2 as a tandem. At No. 3 doubles, Usha Baublitz (New Freedom, Pa.Susquehannock) and Carly Ragan (Lanoka Harbor, N.J./Lacey Twp.) earned their first CACC win as a duo, defeating Koumudi Thirunagaru and Debra Pellegrino 8-0.

Kudriavtceva recorded her fourth win of the season with a 6-3, 6-3 triumph against Ryan at No. 2 singles. Hamada went to 6-2 in dual matches after fighting off a tough challenge from Slater in the No. 3 flight, 6-4, 7-6 (9-7). At No. 4, Baublitz remained perfect in dual matches (5-0) as she knocked off Sara Riccardi 6-1, 6-3.

Mariana Sampaio (Brusque, Brazil/Colegio Consul Carlos Renaux) picked up her team-leading seventh win of the season with a 6-1, 6-3 triumph over Thirunagaru at No. 5. Tabitha Porter (Sumner, Maine./Lisbon) is now 3-1 in dual play with a 6-2, 6-0 victory at No. 6 against Pellegrino.

Philadelphia heads to Cabrini for a non-conference match on Tuesday, Oct. 13 at 3:30 p.m.
