Softball opens conference play with sweep of Goldey-Beacom

WILMINGTON, Del. – The Philadelphia University softball team received five hits and three RBIs from shortstop Stephanie Martin (Hanover, Md./Seton Keough) and strong pitching performances from Samantha Abromavage (Lake Hopatcong, N.J./Jefferson Twp.) and Nicole Troisi (Norristown, Pa./Pope John Paul II) as it swept Goldey-Beacom, 8-0 and 6-1, in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader Tuesday afternoon in the Wilson Complex.

Philadelphia is now 5-7 overall, 2-0 in the CACC, and increases its winning streak to four. Goldey-Beacom dips to 0-6 overall, 0-4 against the conference.

GAME ONE
Abromavage kept the Lightning hitters off-balance during the game's six innings, striking out three batters and allowing just four hits and one walk. She retired six straight hitters from the second through the fourth inning.

Philadelphia's got going with a three-run bottom of the fourth inning. Left fielder Emma Haley (Jensen Beach, Fla./Jensen Beach) starting the inning off with a lead-off single and went to second on a Martin ground out. Mariah Hans (Barrington, N.J./Haddon Heights) broke the scoreless tie with a double to right center for the game's first run. Kasia Smith (Waddell, Ariz./Estrella Foothills) doubled the advantage with a RBI groundout that brought home Hans and Gianna Bliss (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville Area), who reached on an error, added the final run on a wild pitch.

Two innings later, the Rams sealed the game with five runs in the sixth, the final three coming with two outs. Philadelphia put its first three batters of the frame on base with two singles and an error. With one out, Monica Levins (Norristown, Pa./Norristown Area) safely reached on a fielder's choice to plate Smith and keep the bases loaded.

Then, the next four batters each drove in a run to end the game. Shannon Weaver (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) had a sacrifice fly, Haley recorded an inside single, Martin singled to right, and Hans drove a single to left to invoke the mercy rule.

Martin had three of Philadelphia's 10 hits, while Abromavage, Haley, and Hans recorded two each.

Charlee King posted two of the Lightning's four hits. Kylie Doyle allowed eight runs, one earned, in 5.2 innings and struck out two in a losing effort.

GAME TWO
After being held scoreless in the first inning, the Rams pounded out four straight two-out RBI base hits in the second to take a 5-0 lead. Renee Kakareka (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg) started the rally with a bases loaded infield single back to the pitcher to score Gabrielle Brown (Shillington, Pa./Governor Mifflin). Martin came up next and delivered a two-run single to left field to push the advantage to 3-0. Hans and Bliss added RBI singles to left field for the fourth and fifth runs.

The teams traded runs in the sixth inning. Goldey-Beacom scored its run with a two-out single by King to pull the Lightning within 5-1. Kakareka's ground out to second scored Erin Maher (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn), who tripled to lead off inning, to get the run back.

Troisi earned the win for the Rams with 6.1 innings of two-hit ball and seven strikeouts. Natalie Mickles suffered the loss, allowing five runs on seven hits in two innings.

Philadelphia pounded out 11 hits, two each from Kakareka, Hans, and Martin.

The Rams get right back to work with a non-conference doubleheader at West Chester on Wednesday, March 25 at 2:30 p.m.
