Box Score 2 PHILADELPHIA – Emma Haley (Jensen Beach, Fla./Jensen Beach) picked up her 100th career hit with a two-out single in the second inning of the Philadelphia University softball team's 2-1 victory in game two of a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader against Chestnut Hill on Tuesday. The Rams took the opening contest by a 3-0 score.
GAME ONE
Samantha Abromavage (Lake Hopatcong, N.J./Jefferson Twp.) turned in a stellar pitching performance, facing just one hitter over the minimum and striking out two batters over the seven innings to earn the victory (7-6). Abromavage was flawless until the top of the sixth inning when Courtney Dayter broke up the perfect game bid with a one out single just inside the left field foul line.
At the plate, Abromavage helped out her cause by going 2-for-2, including a double to center field in the first inning to plate Stephanie Martin (Hanover, Md./Seton Keough), who walked and stole second, for the game's first run.
One inning later, Mollie Burrell (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton Area) got a hold of a Briannen Holloway pitch and drove it over the left field fence for a solo home run, her first of the season, to double the lead to 2-0.
Martin tacked on Philadelphia's (17-19, 10-8 CACC) third run with a one-out double to left center to score Haley—who went 2-for-3—in the home half of the fifth.
Holloway struck out six, while allowing seven hits and two walks, in a complete-game loss (2-9).
GAME TWO
The Rams turned a Griffin (7-23, 5-17 CACC) error into a pair of runs to take a 2-0 second inning lead.
Abromavage started the inning off by hitting a grounder to short, and the ball went under the glove Koraima Dudley to allow Abromavage to reach second base. After a ground out moved Abromavage to third and a Burrell walk, the Rams perfectly executed a double steal to allow Abromavage to come home and put Philadelphia ahead 1-0.
Two batters later, Renee Karakera (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg) singled in Burrell with a slap single to right field for Philadelphia's second run.
Chestnut Hill got a run back in the top of the fourth inning on a two-out base hit by Francesca Faillace to make the score 2-1.
The Griffins threatened to tie the game up in the fifth, getting a lead-off single from Laura Eidam and a one-out double by Nicole Carney to put runners at second and third. Karakera came in to relief starter Kasia Smith (Waddell, Ariz./Estrella Foothills), and got Sofia Cedrone to ground back to her and—after a walk to load the bases—Jenna Long to ground out to second to stop the rally.
Philadelphia pitching retired the final six Chestnut Hill batters in succession.
Smith had two of Philadelphia's seven hits and was the winning pitcher (4-4), recording six strikeouts and scattering five hits in 4.1 innings. Abromavage struck out two batters in a 1-2-3 seventh to record her first save.
Philadelphia heads to Holy Family for a CACC doubleheader on Friday, April 17 at 3 p.m.
