Softball drops two to Post on Senior Day

PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia University softball team suffered a Senior Day sweep against Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) opponent Post, 3-2 and 2-0, Saturday afternoon.

Before the start of the first game, head coach Larry Cooper and the Rams (17-23, 10-12 CACC) honored seniors Stephanie Martin (Hanover, Md./Seton Keough), Samantha Abromavage (Lake Hopatcong, N.J./Jefferson Twp.), Emma Haley (Jensen Beach, Fla./Jensen Beach), and Kasia Smith (Waddell, Ariz./Estrella Foothills).

GAME ONE
Smith broke the scoreless tie with a two-run home run over the center field fence in the third inning for the first runs of the game. Haley, was reached base on a bunt single, also scored on Smith's second home run of the year.

The Eagles (19-13, 13-5 CACC) got on the board in the top of the fifth on a two-out single from Emily Schaffer to score Kristen Owens to trim the Rams' lead to 2-1. An inning later, Post got RBI singles from Kaitlin Iacomini and Natalie Lennox to take a one-run lead.

Smith went 2-for-3 for Philadelphia, who had four hits in the game.

Schaffer earned the win with three scoreless innings of work in relief of Kaitlin Derby. She allowed just one base runner in her appearance, Megan Letos (Bristow, Va./Stonewall Jackson) on a fifth inning walk.

Abromavage recorded four strikeouts in a complete game loss.

Kristen Owens went 3-for-3 for Post.

GAME TWO
Samantha Esque turned in a strong seven-inning performance, striking out six and allowed just four hits. Esque was perfect until the fifth when Mollie Burrell (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton Area) singled with one out to become the Rams' first base runner.

The Eagles scored both of their runs in the second innings on doubles by Korie McDonald and Marissa Cammarano.

Philadelphia attempted to put together a two-out rally in the sixth thanks two singles by Haley and Martin. However, Esque got a groundout to end the Rams' threat.

Erin Maher (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) had Philadelphia's fourth hit, a single, in the seventh.

Smith struck out a season-high eight batters in a losing effort.

Owens had two of the Eagles' game two hits.

Philadelphia heads to Felician for a CACC doubleheader on Sunday, April 19 at 1 p.m.
