Solid singles play leads men's tennis to 5-3 win at USciences

PHILADELPHIA – A strong showing in singles play carried the Philadelphia University men's tennis team to a 5-3 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) victory over the University of the Sciences on the McNeil Field Courts Thursday afternoon.

USciences (1-8, 1-2 CACC) claimed two of the three doubles matches to take a 2-1 lead going into singles play. The Rams (8-7, 3-1 CACC) got their doubles points the No. 1 tandem of Celso de Vera Rehberger (Oviedo, Spain/Santa Maria del Naranco) and Nicolas Affolter (Freienbach, Switzerland/Kantonsschule Ausserschwz), who defeated Peter Micu and Cameron Carlock 8-1.

Philadelphia showed its strength in singles, winning four of the five matches that were played to completion.

De Vera Rehberger and Affolter each picked up their 11th win of the season with triumphs at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively. In the No. 1 match, de Vera Rehberger won a second set tiebreak to take down Steven Galerkin in straight sets 6-2, 7-6 (7-2). Affolter had an easier time in his match against Carlock, cruising to a 6-0, 6-1 win.

After dropping the first set of his No. 3 match against Micu 6-2, Jacobo Atri (Mexico City, Mexico/Colegio Hebreo Monte Sinai, AC) came back to win the final two sets 6-1, 6-1 to earn a point. Nail Rachidi (Meknes, Morocco/Emile Anouar) remained perfect (6-0) with a 6-1, 7-5 victory against Tanner Kerr in the No. 5 flight.

The No. 4 singles match between Juan Velosa (Bogota, Columbia/Gimnasio Campestre San Rafael) and Tajay McLeod was called in the third set due to darkness.

Philadelphia returns to action with a non-conference match at Millersville on Saturday, April 4 at 11 a.m.
