Softball Wins the First, Drops the Second in Friday Doubleheader at Goldey-Beacom

WILMINGTON, Del. – The Jefferson (Philadelphia University + Thomas Jefferson University) softball team (14-18, 10-10 CACC) split its Friday afternoon road doubleheader at Goldey-Beacom (3-26, 3-17 CACC) from Jackson Athletic Complex in Wilmington, Del. The Rams won game one, 4-1, before falling in game two, 2-1.

FRIDAY GAME ONE – W, 4-1
Jefferson snapped its four-game losing streak with a 4-1 in game one over Goldey-Beacom on Friday.

Sophomore Jovanna Alfonsi singled in a run in the first inning before the Lightning tied it up in the bottom half of the inning, 1-1.

Alfonsi brought home another run in the top of the fifth when she reached on an error before junior Courtney Wensel recorded an RBI groundout to make it 3-1 in favor of the Rams.

Another RBI groundout by Wensel in the seventh scored Williams as an insurance run as the Rams held on to the 4-1 victory.

Junior Stephanie Pepper (W, 8-6) gave up just the one run in the first inning as she pitched a complete game with seven strikeouts and three hits allowed. Two of those three hits for Goldey-Beacom came in the first inning as the Jefferson junior was practically lights out for the rest of the game.

FRIDAY GAME TWO – L, 2-1
The hits were a bit harder to come by in game two for both Jefferson and Goldey-Beacom as the two squads managed eight for the game.

Scoreless through three innings, Jefferson broke through in the top of the fourth when Pepper singled up the middle to score Williams.

Freshman Emily Bradley (L, 1-3) pitched 5.0 innings with three strikeouts.

The Lightning earned a walk to start the top of the sixth before a single put two on. Jefferson made a pitching change with Pepper coming into relieve Bradley. Those two runners eventually came around to score on a single as Goldey-Beacom went up 2-1.

The Rams went down in order in the top of the seventh as the Lightning earned the 2-1 comeback.
