Men's Soccer Drops Season Opener on Overtime Penalty Kick

PHILADELPHIA – The Thomas Jefferson University men's soccer team evened the score late in the second half but ultimately fell, 2-1, in overtime to Nyack in the season opener for both teams on Monday afternoon.

GAMEPLAY
It was a physical first half with each team being whistled for nine fouls during the period. The Warriors had a 6-2 advantage in shots but could only place one on goal. The shot count was more even in the second, with Nyack holding a slim 5-4 edge. Each team created opportunities with four corner kicks in the stanza but could not push a goal across until the 78th minute. Nyack took a 1-0 lead with a service to the right post that was headed in.

With time winding down, Jefferson broke through in the 84th minute to bring the score level. The Rams were awarded a corner kick and the ball was sent into the box. After a failed clearing attempt by Nyack, Tanner Hanks stood out in the scrum and headed a loose ball into the goal to tie it at one. Neither team could produce another tally before the end of regulation.

Nyack recorded all three shots in the extra session and the Warriors' pressure drew a penalty kick with just 35 seconds left on the clock in the first overtime period. Mitchell Reed converted the PK to give Nyack the victory.

NOTES
- John Nelson turned away two shots for the Rams in his collegiate debut.
