Volleyball Takes Conference Opener at Goldey-Beacom; Win Streak Up to Nine

WILMINGTON, Del. – One streak ended on Wednesday for the Thomas Jefferson University volleyball team but the more important streak stayed alive as the Rams topped host Goldey-Beacom, 3-1, for their ninth straight win to start the season.

The 9-0 Rams took the first two sets of the match to increase their run to 21 straight set victories going back to their second match of the year on September 3. The Lightning took the third frame to stop the run but Jefferson bounced back to clinch the match in the fourth.

GAMEPLAY
Goldey-Beacom opened the match with four of the first five points but the Rams came back with three straight to tie it at four. Jefferson trailed 7-6 before embarking on a 4-0 run to take a 10-7 lead. The Rams did not trail for the rest of the frame. With the score 21-19, Jefferson tallied four in a row to win the set 25-19.

The Lightning posted the first two points of the second but the Rams responded with five consecutive and nine of 11 to go in front 9-4. With the score 13-8, Jefferson had another rally, this time seven out of eight points, to make it an 11-point advantage (20-9). The Rams went on to win the stanza 25-14.

The two squads were even at four in the third set before GBC had an 8-2 surge to take a 12-6 lead. With the score 13-8, Jefferson fought back with a 7-1 spurt to go in front 15-14. The Rams had the upper hand, 21-20, but the Lightning struck for five straight points to take the set 25-21.

In the fourth, Goldey-Beacom had a 5-3 edge but Jefferson strung together four points to take a 7-5 lead. The Rams saw an 8-6 advantage erased by a four-point Lightning rally, but they would not be outdone as they responded with a 7-1 run to reclaim the lead 15-11.
